more fun

We went Frisbee golfing at yet another course today. That’s three times this week for me, four for Firefly. I had never been there before, and I did so badly that I lost track of how far over par I was. I can’t really complain too much, it was a really long course with quite a few par 5 holes, and some were set up strangely. It was really hot and muggy, so I’m a little worn out.

Firefly’s best friend just got here a little while ago and we’re going out to dinner with her, and my sister and the girl she’s been seeing. I’m really looking forward to hanging out tonight. It’s been a while since we’ve seen her and it’s always a good time. I suppose I should get off of here so we can get going.

i love the weekend

The weekend is here–for me at least, as Firefly is working overtime tonight–and I’m so glad this week is over. We got a bit more of the debris from the windstorm cleared from the backyard this afternoon. The neighbors pretty much have everything cleaned up from the large portions of tree (or rather two trees) that fell across their driveway and into our yard, but this is what it looked like right after the fact:

Not the best picture, but you get the idea.

Firefly’s best friend is coming into town to hang out with us tomorrow and spend the night. I’m really looking forward to it. We’re going to have dinner with her and some friends, and then come back to the house to play games and have some drinks. Fun!

power to the people!

Well, the power is back on at work, which meant overtime for me trying to finish everything before processing ended tonight. Ah, well. More comp time banked for when I need to take some leave for baby bonding, seeing as how I won’t qualify for maternity leave since, you know, it won’t be my baby–at least as far as the powers that be are concerned.

We’re getting so close…

sleep is good.

Well, there was still no power at work. We’ll see if it’s back on tomorrow, I suppose. I called my boss on his cell and he told me not to worry about coming in, so I went back to bed. I actually woke up feeling rested, which is a rarity these days.

The framing inspector came today and signed off on the work, which is good. We’ll be able to start insulating now. I can’t wait for this all to be done.

We went Frisbee golfing again today, this time with Firefly’s sister. I came in at 9 over par. Not as good as yesterday, but it was on a different course that I haven’t played on in a while and I was having issues. I was still under 10 over, so I’m happy with it. They, of course, both came in under par. Firefly was -3 and her sister was -4. Someday I will be able to give them some real competition. I hope…

no work, all play

There is still no power at work, and I know some of my friends don’t have power at home. More than half of the city was still out earlier today. Hopefully they’ll get everything up and running soon. Right now my neighborhood smells like burning leaves, and major traffic lights are still out in our area. When I got to work my boss was out on the grounds in his suit helping to pile up the large branches. We went to our other campus to check in on things there, then went out for breakfast. I worked until 10:30 getting some things organized, and then he sent me home. I think I’m going to call in the morning to see what the status is before I drive in.

Firefly and I went Frisbee golfing today. There were some pretty big trees down on the course, but the park service had cleared the greens already. I got 7 over par. At the beginning of the season my goal was to come in under 10 over, and this is the third time I’ve done it, which is awesome.

After Firefly left for work tonight I put in the outlets in the bathroom and the new one in the bedroom, as well as putting in the switch for the new light. I called the inspection scheduling line this afternoon to try and reschedule the framing inspection. Of course you don’t actually talk to anyone, so we really don’t know what’s going on. Hopefully they come tomorrow.

I’m sending out good thoughts to a friend today. Her father has cancer and had an appointment with his doctor. The news wasn’t good.

hello again.

It’s been an interesting day. There were over half a million people without power in the Ohio valley today, 300,000 in my immediate area. They’re saying some people can expect to be out of power for a week or more while they get everything restored. My sister called me around 1:30 this afternoon to tell me her power had just come back on. My workplace was out of power, which is not good when you have a few hundred kids running around. They canceled school and sent the kids home. I worked until the middle of the afternoon catching up on filing until my boss said enough was enough and sent me home. I spent a couple of hours cleaning up our front yard, and we got most of the bigger stuff out of the back. I also talked for a bit with the man who lives across the street and heard some interesting stories about the previous owners of our house, including the story of why our front light post is crooked. We really did make out good, all things considered. No power loss, no major damage to our trees, no house damage that I’ve seen on our street–or heard about, and believe me, if there was I would have heard it from the lady across the street.

Probably needless to say, my bike class was canceled for the week and the framing inspector didn’t show up. We should get bumped to tomorrow’s list, but it sucks for Firefly because she couldn’t really sleep today waiting to see if they showed and thinking about the after effects of the storm. Hopefully they come tomorrow, and early so she can get some rest.

this blows.

Well, we had pretty nice weather yesterday. We were outside all day with no rain, although it was extremely hot and humid. I can’t speak for everyone else, but I had a great time. The weather has flared up with a vengeance today, however. We’ve had 46 mph sustained winds and gusts up to 70. There are trees and branches down everywhere and last I heard more than 190,000 people in the area were out of power. Obviously we’re not one of them. We’ve had some flickers and actually lost power a few times very briefly, but it’s come back on in a matter of seconds. So far we’ve only lost small stuff from our trees, but our neighbors lost the top third of their pine and a very large branch off of another tree. There is now a twenty foot section spread across their driveway and into our yard.

We ran a few errands today despite the weather, then worked in the house hiding out from the wind. We got the light installed in the bedroom and tested it out. Everything seems to be in good working order, and although I wouldn’t mind having a brighter light it’s so nice to have something.

One good thing about the weather is that a cold front is moving in, so my bike class tomorrow and our 4+ mile ride is going to be much more comfortable. I was trying to figure out a route to work that avoided some of the major roads if I wanted to try to ride to work, and I’ve found one that uses a bike trail for much of the time and is just under 8 miles, which I don’t think would be too bad. I don’t know that I would be able to do it every day, but it would certainly be something to think about. It would be nicer if I had a road bike rather than a mountain bike, but it would certainly work for now. Firefly and I are going to try it out and see how it is and how long it would take.

hooray for good friends and good times

Well, it’s hot and muggy, but the weather report and radar are looking much better than yesterday so hopefully the rain will hold off and we can play outside all day. We’ve got a small group here now, and we expect it to grow a decent amount later. I’m really looking forward to a day relaxing with friends.

I made one of my rare kitchen experiments today. I am not a good cook by any stretch of the imagination. I can bake, it’s the other stuff that I have problems with. I made a fresh spinach salad with hard boiled eggs, bacon bits, pine nuts that I roasted, and balsamic vinaigrette dressing. I hope it’s good.

oh, I’d better go. I think I hear my drink calling me…

fun fun.

Well, we passed our electrical inspection and Firefly scheduled the framing inspection for Monday. We were a bit worried about when our permit was going to expire, because it wasn’t clear when it would by looking at it. The inspector told her that every inspection gives us another six months on the permit, so we’re fine.

She just came in and said: “are you writing about how the Firefly is a butthead?” So, just in case there was any doubt: the Firefly is, indeed, a butthead.

Her sister is over and we cleaned for a little bit, and now we’re taking a break from basement darts. Firefly is crushing us–although we both held our own on the first game. At least we’re having fun. My shafts are not doing well, so she’s letting me use an extra set she has. It’s crazy how much difference they make. We’re thinking about going to the dart store around the corner from our house in the morning so I that can get a replacement set and we can look at some other stuff.

And now I should stop being antisocial.

yay!

She’s home. I’m happy.

I scheduled the electrical inspection for tomorrow, although you don’t actually talk to anyone, just leave a message, so I’m all paranoid that I did something wrong. We’ll see I guess. Assuming we pass we can schedule the framing inspection for Monday, then on to the insulation.

We’re having a cookout on Saturday, sort of an end-of-the-summer, belated birthday to Firefly. I’m really looking forward to it, but the weather doesn’t look promising. It’s supposed to storm some, but hopefully it’ll nice enough where we are. If not, we’ll just hang out inside, watch football, and play darts and other assorted games.

We’re getting closer and closer…
