is it over already?

I’m not ready for the end of the weekend. We were going to work on the bathroom today. Really we were. But it’s been grey and then raining, and Firefly went back to third shift tonight, and we weren’t feeling very motivated. So what that really meant was that we ate some lunch, cleaned up the kitchen, talked about what we’re going to do in the bathroom, and then I called Bean to see if she would come over tomorrow and help Firefly do those things. We spent the rest of the afternoon hanging out together on the couch.

She also decided she needed to take a nap, so she put her head on my lap and zonked out for over two hours. She was so warm and comfy that I decided I shouldn’t disturb her, so I watched some TV while she slept. It was probably a good thing that she slept so long, though, because I fully expect that she will come home in the morning and climb right into bed. Too bad I won’t be there…

i love spring.

We’ve had a lovely day. We slept in a bit, then took advantage of the beautiful day and went out for a round of disc golf. When we finished I indulged my wife’s craving and we went for ice cream. Or something like that. Although I may have some of the pronouns backward…

We worked a bit on the tile in the bathroom, so almost everything is done and ready to grout. We got all the little pieces cut and placed, so the only thing left is finishing up around the doorway and the backsplash on the vanity. Hopefully we can finish those tomorrow.

Now I’d better go get ready to go so we can grab some dinner and head to Bennder and girlfriend-who-does-not-have-a-nickname-yet’s place for an evening of fun with friends. Later!

good weather and good times.

It’s been a beautiful day here in my neck of the woods. Firefly and I took some time out to throw some discs and enjoy the weather. Bennder met us for a bit, and before we knew it, it was time to head out for a nice dinner and then on to Dee and Pia’s to celebrate Pia’s birthday. Which is where I find myself now, enjoying my friends and my wife and a drink or two. I hope everyone is having a lovely evening!

hey, guess what?

We have our first appointment scheduled with the OB. We’ll be going next Thursday. Supposedly there’s some other appointment elsewhere that they want you to go to first, but the woman Firefly talked to on the phone was all freaked out that we’re getting close to the end of the first trimester and wanted to know why she hadn’t come in earlier…to which Firefly replied that she had talked to someone in their office TWO WEEKS AGO and was told that they would be contacting her about setting up an appointment once her files arrived from the RE. She’s tried other times with no answer, and was mildly surprised to get one when she called today. It’s certainly not from lack of trying on our part. Of course, I’m also doubtful that she really comprehended when Firefly was explaining that she does, in fact, really know her exact due date, and that she’s already had her first U/S, or that she’s been under a doctor’s care throughout this process which is why they were waiting on her files to be transferred. And we still don’t know if that’s actually happened yet, because the office the woman transferred her to…didn’t answer. Perhaps they’ll actually return her call.

Aaaaaanyway, at least it’s scheduled now. And the other appointment is scheduled for later, if it does in fact turn out that we need it.

So, because of that and other things that evening I would be missing my cake decorating class next week. Spider will also not be able to be there–although she has a much…better(?) reason. Since half of our 4-person class wouldn’t be able to go, our instructor offered to have the session on Monday instead if everyone was okay with it, and since only one of the other women was there and she had no problem we’re on. Next Monday: flowers. Lots and lots of flowers.

Tonight we made bluebirds, which I took a picture of, and some apple blossoms, and a few violets–which Spider and I made in pink since I didn’t have violet coloring when I made the icing last night and it was easier to just use what was already in the piping bag–neither of which I took pictures of because my camera battery was dying. So you will just have to wait to see them.

Oh, my lovely wife has just come in to inform me that she is going to bed, so I shall too. Goodnight!

well hey!

I have my first real question from a reader. Well, a first topic suggestion. Kristin from Poughkeepsie (actually I have no idea where she’s from, I just think it just sounds cool) wonders how we decided which of us would be carrying our child. That’s a great question. Ask and ye shall receive!

Every couple in our position has different reasons for deciding which mother will carry. Some women never want to carry, others have dreamed about nothing else–and some times that’s the complete opposite of what you would expect. I know one couple, now split, that was very butch/femme. It was the butch, however, who wanted to carry, and did. Some people choose based on family medical history or their own health. If there’s something that runs in your family and you have the option of using another womb to try and avoid passing it on, sometimes that’s the choice that you make.

For us it wasn’t a question of who would carry, but rather who would carry first. Honestly I don’t think she’s all that excited about the things that come along with pregnancy. I’m guessing that’s true of a lot of people; I mean who really wants to deal with nausea or gas, swollen ankles or an aching back? She’s definitely not looking forward to the attention it will bring. I tell her she can send it all my way, but if she had her druthers she’d go hide out somewhere and show up mid-November with a babe in tow. She does, however, want to experience pregnancy, and she thinks she has good jeans. Or wait…that’s me. Yeah, I’m a dork. See, baby, what you have to look forward to? She thinks she has good genes, and I’m inclined to agree. I also want to carry and, although there are things that I’m not looking forward to as well, I’m excited to experience it.

Firefly is a few years older than me and it will likely be a couple of years until we try again, so it made sense to us for her to try first. If I were to try first, she would be edging closer to 40 by the time she tried, and the risks to the baby go up significantly (not to mention the success rate drops significantly) the closer you get to that milestone. Depending on when we start and how long it takes me, I could potentially be younger than she is now when I carry. We want to be able to give our children the best life we can, and minimize the risks to them where possible.

And there you have it.

stuffy sleepy

Goodness. A whole week with Firefly on first shift and what do I do? End up with a head like a balloon. I’m so stuffy, and I’m worried about keeping her up. I took some allergy stuff, but I took some of the same stuff this morning and it didn’t work at all. I have some other congestion stuff that I took when I got home from work that seemed to help, but it’s non-drowsy formula, and frankly I’m tired as hell and although I slept for a bit earlier I really need to sleep tonight. Hopefully it doesn’t drive me to the couch so I’m not bothering her.

The work day went pretty quickly, though. I got quite a bit done and may actually be able to finish everything up ahead of schedule, which would be great. Regardless I shouldn’t have to stay over any more this week.

The city wants to do some work on the sewers in our area (namely installing them so we can get rid of the septic), but they want to tear up a good part of our yard to do it which we are not happy about. They didn’t know that both we and our neighbors have underground electric right where they want to dig, or that our septic tank is on the other side of the house from that, so to connect us they’d have to go all the way around and through our back yard to hook us up. Ummmm. Yeah. They’re supposed to come to the house to meet with us tomorrow, and I’m hoping they’ll have a different plan. We also really don’t want to lose some of the trees they’d have to take out if they continue with what they said before, even though they’d pay us for them. I guess we’ll find out. It is the city, after all, so I’m not holding my breath. Which would be very bad right now considering how my head feels…

jeez.

I am not getting sick. Do you hear me? Not sick.

And now if you’ll excuse me I need to go blow my nose.

i wish the weekend was longer.

Well, we’ve had a pretty good weekend. Yesterday we did some stuff around the house working on the tile and just general putzing around, and then we went to the hockey game. We had great seats and were closer to the ice than we’ve been before, which was really cool. You know what else is really cool? She’s on first shift this week. That means she’s still here! And she’ll be here every night this week! I’m so happy.

Today we went to the grocery (and I managed to stay focused enough to not drive her completely crazy), then headed off to OM’s house for her annual Easter dinner. It’s a large affair that is always interesting, and it’s great to see everyone and eat lots of yummy food. Too much yummy food. Oh well. While we were there Firefly’s aunt, whom we had left a message for earlier, called back so we were able to tell her our good news and chat for a little bit.

I can’t believe we’re at 9 weeks as of yesterday! It’s so strange coming at this from the other side: a mom-to-be without any of the symptoms and changes that pregnancy brings. I know she’s pregnant–I’ve seen the proof–but for me, other than having a very tired wife who occasionally mentions that her tummy is feeling a little off nothing has changed. It’s a bit surreal. I know she’s dreading it, but honestly I can’t wait for her to start showing, and to be able to feel little kicks. And I can’t wait to meet this little one.

whew!

What a crazy week! My cake decorating class started back up last night. There are only four of us this time around so it’s going to be even more laid back than it’s was last month, I think–although Spider got called into work to deal with an emergency just as she was walking in which sucked. I told her she should say “listen bitches I gotta go make some rosettes!” She just laughed.  We learned how to make a couple of flowers, although I didn’t get any pictures. I really sucked at the rose buds and was getting pretty frustrated with that, but I was good at the rosettes and the other things we did so it was all good.

Today I spent all day training at work. And I mean all day. I started presenting to the first group at 8 this morning, and didn’t finish with the 5th and final group until 4 this afternoon. I didn’t even get a lunch break, although my coworker did run out and bring back some food that we ate quickly between groups. I am exhausted. All the groups are trained now, though, so that’s good–although I’m sure there will be a few stragglers I’ll have to go over things with. On top of all the training I’ve been doing this week we’ve got a ton of extra stuff to take care of because my boss is on vacation through the middle of next week. We’ll be okay, it’s just made for a stressful week.

Tonight we went out to dinner with some friends and I got to hold the most beautiful boy. He slept the whole time while I kept kissing his forehead. Firefly just kept chuckling at me. She’s been dozing on and off on the couch pretty much since we got back home. I suppose I should try to get her into bed now…

well…

I’m having a bit of a crazy week. My boss is on vacation, and I’ve been spending most of the week so far training staff. I should have some time to work on my regular duties tomorrow, but I’ve been running like crazy and stayed over an hour and a half today. I just can’t wait for the end of Friday. I’m training all day starting at 8 and going until at least 4, so I will be so ready to go home and spend some time relaxing with my wife.

The good thing? Firefly told me tonight she’s got a work thing that will have her on first shift all next week, and she’s off tomorrow night. Now, while that second part is going to make it really hard for me to drag myself in to work on Friday, having my wife at home in bed with me every night next week is going to be so, so nice!

Oh, and Firefly kicked ass at darts tonight. They won 6 of the 7 games, and in one of them Firefly got a white horse (three different triples in one turn–she got the 18s, 19s, and 20s), then two more triples the next turn (her partner had gotten a triple 17 and one 15, so one of her 15s counted as points and she got the 16s) then she hit three bulls over the next two turns to win it in only 7 rounds. Damn! It was totally hot.
