all about baby

We had the US today. We went in and she got undressed from the waist down as instructed (although she left her socks on for modesty’s sake). We just kept looking at the probe for the machine and giggling. After about 10 minutes he came in and we got our first look at Firefly’s insides. It was pretty neat, actually, although not necessarily what I was expecting. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but I honestly hadn’t even thought about it being a probe until she said something about it in the car on the way there.

He showed us her uterus and measured the lining. He said he was looking for a minimum thickness of 10mm and hers was 17, which he said was good. Then we moved on to the ovaries. He wanted to see follicles that were 22mm minimum. He started with the left, where she had one that was 27mm and a few that were tiny. She had two that were right around 22mm in the right one. He said this is also good. After he was done Firefly got dressed and we went and sat down with the nurse. She mixed the meds and give us instructions on how to give the injection, and then we walked next door to buy our swimmers. It was rather surreal.

She got the trigger shot tonight; her dart league started back up and a friend of ours gave it to her outside of the bar where they played. Hey, it worked for another friend of ours. She said if we get pregnant on the first try we’ll have to name it after her, but we’re not convinced. We go in for our first attempt at making a baby at 9 a.m. on Friday. I’m trying to be realistic and not to get too excited because I know that lots of couples have to try many times before they get a positive result, but it’s not working very well.

I saw the probe, but didn’t know exactly what it was until the, uh, very last minute. even when she put the condom on it I didn’t put 2 and 2 together….

And they put a condom on it?? Do you at least get lube? All this stuff really makes me want a baby. Not at all.

linda, that’s so funny! I can see how you might not have realized if it didn’t already have the cover on. They already had the probe set up, and a box of “probe covers” sitting on the cart, so it was obvious to us what it was for–although I might not have realized it if Firefly hadn’t said something beforehand.

The probe looks like a half-inch diameter wand with a wide tip and a handle. The only difference between the cover and an actual condom was that the cover didn’t have a reservoir at the tip. They did lube it up with a little gel, though.

the doc said there are special covers, but she just uses condoms cuz they’re cheaper. she put the gel stuff on it, but I thought it was the gel they spread on your tummy when they do the external one. and that the condom was just there as a kind of rubber glove so they didn’t have to clean all the gunk off the probe all the time.

    not my best brain day.

I wouldn’t have known either, Linda. Now, I am forewarned.
