a lot of monkey and a little of us update.

Today was Monkey’s 4-month appointment, albeit a few weeks late due to scheduling. He’s doing very well, and although he dropped to 25th percentile in weight and 25-50th in height the doctor was pleased with his growth and isn’t at all concerned so neither are we. He’s up to 14 pounds exactly, and is 24 1/2 inches long.

We’ve been cleared to start trying to introduce solids if we’d like, starting with cereal until he seems to be enjoying it, or at least a week, whichever takes longer. After that we can start introducing veggies and fruits one at a time, each one for at least a week before introducing another. I’m not sure if we’ll try to start that this weekend or hold off a little longer since we’ve got a lot going on at the moment. It might be a good thing, though, since Firefly has been having a little trouble keeping up lately and we’ve had to supplement some with formula–usually once, sometimes twice a day. We think he may be having a growth spurt, because he seems to be eating a lot more but still with the same frequency. He’s also been totally interested in whatever we’re eating and follows our movements, trying to get hold of anything that comes close enough. We’ve let him play with his own spoon a bit, putting it in his mouth for him, and he promptly tries to grab it or pull into his mouth when we get near.

The doctor is very pleased with his motor skills, and he’s still ahead of the curve in that aspect. He loves to stand–supported, of course he can’t do it on his own, although he can stay up easily if he’s holding on to something like the side of the crib or someone’s fingers. I think it’s his favorite thing to do. He’s also been pulling his little legs up under him during his tummy time, enough so that you can put your whole hand under his belly. He can’t get the hang of getting both ends up at the same time, so he looks a bit like a little inchworm pushing his butt up while his head is on the ground, then pushing his whole upper body up and dropping his butt back down.

Wednesday evening Firefly was on the floor next to the couch with her knees up, and she had her arm up on the other side. Monkey was propped up against her legs with his feet on her belly, and he would rock, rock, rock his upper body forward until he managed to get himself up to standing, where he’d stay for a second or two and then over he would go toward her. She would catch him and he just giggled away. It was the cutest thing ever. He was also sitting up on his play mat all by himself, holding onto one of the bars for support, and he sat in a little tripod all by himself for at least a minute when he was distracted by something pretty on the TV. Usually he doesn’t stay up for long because he gets interested in things and moves or tries to get them, and his balance isn’t good enough to do both. He can’t get himself up into a sitting position, but once he’s there he likes it and goodness he’s trying as hard as he can! He’ll sit reclined on our laps and do little baby crunches trying to get himself up. If we’ve got our legs at an angle he can do it, and seems so pleased with himself when he does.

He’s been jabbering away and blowing raspberries, and buzzing his lips back at us when we do it to him. He gets spit everywhere, but he’s having a great time and is so cute. He’s also been saying boo back at me when I say it to him, which just started yesterday. I don’t think I’ve heard any other consonants yet, but it’s pretty cool.

Firefly got a cold this week and is working overtime all weekend. She was feeling a bit better today and seemed a bit less congested, although she didn’t sound like it because her voice is going. So far other than a bit of stuffiness Monkey doesn’t seem to have gotten it, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I think it may have affected his sleep, though, since he woke up Wednesday night–or rather Thursday at 3:30 in the morning, and then again this morning at around 5:30. I changed him and fed him and he went back to sleep with little fuss, but I had a lot of trouble sleeping myself on Wednesday night so I was exhausted yesterday. I did manage to get to bed at a reasonable hour last night and got a bigger chunk of sleep, so I was feeling a lot better today. I really can’t complain since he’s been such a good sleeper. I think today was only the fourth time he’s woken at night pretty much since coming home. I actually thought I might have been getting sick, but I think most of my stuffiness was the result of all the crying I did this week; either that or I just didn’t get it nearly as bad as Firefly.

And now it’s time for me to stop going on and start getting ready for bed.
