a scare

We had a bit of a scare tonight. I was telling Firefly about a co-worker whose baby fell down the basement stairs (the baby is fine, don’t worry) because her husband accidentally left the gate open. They, like us, don’t have an actual door to their basement. We have a temporary compression gate up and he isn’t in that area on his own, but we need to get the mounted gate up ASAP.

So not five minutes later she’s on the couch holding Monkey and he’s being his usual squirmy, climbing self, when next thing we know he’s catapulted himself out of her arms, over the arm of the couch and onto the floor. Oh! Talk about panic! He cried for a moment, but he seems to be fine. We think it was just the suddenness of it and surprise more than anything else, and within the next five minutes he was playing away with us–on the floor. Still, I’ll definitely be checking in on him before I go to bed. Like I don’t every night anyway…

Don’t you love that? I’m sure the suddenness of it was more scary to him than the actual fall, though it’s the complete opposite for the parents.

That first big fall is soooooooo scary. Sounds like all’s well and you guys handled it well. At least you’ll be ready for the next one 😉

Yes, he’s fine now so it seems like it was definitely just the scare. We both stayed really calm on the outside, but I know she felt so terrible about it even though it was TOTALLY not her fault. Although I, for one, have been a little more paranoid than…well, my usual paranoid self.

I am ashamed to admit how many times K fell or launched herself off of high surfaces – the couch, several beds, even her change table. She has also taken one tumble down the stairs. So far, all seems to be intact.
scariest moments of my life though!

Thanks, Janine. It’s kind of crazy that someone else saying “my baby did the same thing that could have seriously injured them but it didn’t” can be! We just had a bed incident, as well, and with as much as he flips himself over and wiggles around on the changing table I’m sort of amazed we’ve managed to keep him on it, to be honest.
